Being born and raised a Mainer, I have a special affection for the blueberry. It’s true. My favorite book when I was a kid was Blueberries for Sal and it was the first book I bought for my son when I found out I was expecting. My childhood was filled with blueberry recipes and blueberry desserts. My favorite blueberry recipe back then was blueberry pancakes. I liked them stacked tall, purple syrup pouring over the edges and pooling all around them. Yum!

I can still remember my Uncle Wayne showing up at our house with five-gallon buckets of ripe purple blueberries. All six of us girls came alive as we rushed in after him, thanking him excitedly, and asking if we could have just a few, just a taste, please. He agreed and as Mom filled us each a mug he would tell us of how he had spent the whole day raking them, watching for bears out of one eye as the sun tried to melt him into a puddle. It sounded like hard, dangerous work. But the reward was grand.
After Uncle Wayne left, my sisters and I would spend hours picking the stems and sorting out the leaves so my mom could wash them. By the time we were done our tongues were stained blue and we all had purple fingertips and wide smiles. Yes, blueberries are kind of my thing. We go way back.
Today I want to share with you my favorite blueberry recipes and some more that I have on my list to bake this blueberry season. Let’s dig in!
Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins – These muffins are the blueberry muffin you’re dreaming of. Every true New Englander knows that Jordan Marsh, once a famous department store, made its greatest contribution to humanity by supplying shoppers with these delightful delicacies. They are big, cakey, studded throughout with blueberries and they have those sweet little rivers of purple juice trails running throughout them. Wicked good! I like the cake part of pancakes. I want them bouncy and kind of spongey. All the better for absorbing the ridiculous amount of syrup I’ve got heading their way. I also want them sweet and with a touch of spice. My favorite Blueberry Pancake Recipe comes from Lindsay at House of Yum. These pancakes are so fluffy and she doesn’t skimp on the blueberries. The only alteration I make to her recipe is that I add a 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Seriously, cake for breakfast, y’all.
I go through smoothie phases a few times a year where I load my fruit up with flax seed and Moringa and really go all-in on my energy seeking. I can get pretty hardcore about putting together the perfect healthy smoothie. But sometimes simple is best. And this Blueberry Banana Smoothie from Cookie and Cate is just that, simply wonderful. She says the oats are optional but I highly recommend you give them a whirl. They make it oh so creamy and a really wonderful blueberry breakfast treat.
Lemon Blueberry Bread
Up in Roan Mountain, there is this truly amazing little hole-in-the-wall place that makes the best wood-grilled pizza you will ever eat. Ever! It’s called Smoky Mountain Bakers and T and I visit every single time we hike Roan Mountain. But even if they didn’t offer the most amazing pizza, all charred from the grill and loaded with veggies they just picked from their on-site garden, cheese oozing off the edges… Sorry, I got carried away. Ahem…
But even without the pizza, we would still stop for their Lemon Tea Bread. I had no idea that bread could taste like dessert the way their lemon tea bread does. It’s cakey and sticky and the tangy lemon flavor adds just the right amount of spunk to the dessert, I mean bread. It’s something else. But they are not sharing their recipes. In my efforts to duplicate their flavors I have discovered this Lemon Blueberry Bread from The Almanac and its consistency and bright flavors are close to what they have up there in the mountains. Try it for yourself. Prepare to get hooked.
You know how I love my pie! I shared my favorite Fall Pie Recipes with you before and many of you thanked me. (Especially for the Bourbon-Chocolate Walnut Pie). This Homemade Blueberry Pie Recipe from Amy at House of Nash is the best I’ve ever baked. I love the addition of the lemon zest. It bakes such a bright, fresh pie! Plus, she avoids the usual pitfalls of too much juice or too much thickener! The consistency is perfect. The pie is beautiful. This is the one, guys. The blueberry dessert you’ve been craving since you left The Farmer’s Market.
Blueberry Cobbler is incredibly hard to mess up. Last week I made a Peach Cobbler with some Georgia Peaches I found at the produce stand and it was good. Peach cobbler is my husband’s favorite cobbler. Mine, hands down, is this Blueberry Cobbler Recipe from AllRecipes. The addition of the orange juice is what sets it apart from the other cobblers I’ve baked. Just add vanilla bean ice cream to achieve excellence.
In my family, my sister Allison is the Queen of Cheesecake. Her cheesecakes are so creamy and rich and silky and perfect, that I almost didn’t dare attempt my own. I knew better than to try to compete with her mad culinary school skill anyway. But then she moved out of state and forced me to accept store-bought or learn. Over the years while she was living at the ocean, I was suffering severely from a lack of cheesecake. I tried many recipes but it wasn’t until I came across this Blueberry Cheesecake Recipe from Sam at SugarSpunRun that I tasted again what amazing cheesecake is when done right. Drizzle this Homemade Blueberry Sauce from MyBakingAddiction on the top for a treasure of a blueberry dessert recipe.
By this point in my list, you’ve probably caught on that I really like cake. I want my muffins and my pancakes cakey, my bread spongey and sticky, and my cake, well it just has to be cake. Blueberry Cake is a blueberry dessert that comes in multiple forms. There is the blueberry bundt cake, the blueberry coffee cake, the blueberry sponge cake, and the Blueberry Orange Brunch Cake, and so many more. But I can only have one favorite, and I do. You need to try Tieghans Bursting Blueberry Lemon Layer Cake from Half Baked Harvest. It’s one of those beautiful desserts that tastes as good as it looks. The Blueberry Buttercream you wrap it all up in is loaded with blueberry and blackberry jam and mascarpone. I confess, you actually only have to use one jam or the other but I used both and I have no regrets. Call it self-love and bake yourself this cake, because that’s what it is. Love at first bite.
Ok, so this list could go on for a while. I have a lot of blueberry recipes I adore. We even use blueberries and basil on our flatbread pizzas and also in salads.
