Create a Break Room Basket for Health Care Workers

Now Is The Time To Volunteer

Creating A Break Room Basket For Health Care Workers Is An Easy Way To Show You Care

In this post, I am going to show you how to put together a break room basket for health care workers. This simple act of kindness was inspired by a project called Help for Heroes being put on by my church, Grace Fellowship. I feel strongly about volunteering all year long, but if ever there has been a time to reach out, it is now.

Health Care Workers - Create A Break Room Basket

“To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our Health Care Workers Need Our Support

Our health care workers are operating on the front lines of this pandemic. They risk exposure and uncertainty every day. They fear they will bring sickness home to their own families. They are working with patients struggling for breath, in great pain, and even dying despite their efforts. They continue to battle a disease that they are still learning how to fight and there is no cure. Emotionally, physically, and spiritually, these heroes are exhausted. They could use every bit of support we can extend.

Also worth noting…

We Need To Take Care of Ourselves and Our Loved Ones. Volunteering Is Good For Our Mental Health!

A lot of us are really starting to feel the weight of the struggles caused by living in a world with COVID. We miss our families and our friends, our date nights, and our vacations. We miss shopping and coffee shop stops, and life as it was. We miss gathering. And we still don’t know when to expect a return to the former. It is getting heavy.

It would be easy to fall into depression. So, we need to watch out for our mental health and that of our loved ones. Did you know that participating in volunteer work greatly reduces depression and anxiety? It does. It’s also good for your physical health and a great way to be part of a community.

What You Need To Create A Break Room Basket

I chose a regular woven basket that I got from Walmart but other members used laundry baskets, storage containers, and even large salad bowls to create theirs.

You’ll need snacks. I purchased individually wrapped cookie packages, chips, crackers, cheez-its, fruit snacks, mini candy bars, snack cakes, and granola bars.

Letters of encouragement make a nice addition. I included a set of my Scripture Cards and a set of the Numbers 6 Blessing Cards in mine. Others used sticky notes with inspiring messages and some included a handwritten notecard.

How Do You Donate Your Basket?

In our case, the church had tables set up and I just drove mine over there and left it on the table. Our Outreach Team will see they get to their final destinations. However, you can always contact your local hospital and let them know you have a basket and find out where and when to deliver it yourself.

T and I have delivered similar baskets on Nurses Appreciation Day and we have stopped by with pizza at our local emergency room too. We’ve never been turned away when we spontaneously arrive with food but considering the changes in procedure at our local hospital, I would recommend calling ahead and seeing if someone can meet you at the curb.

Other Ways You Can Support Your Local Health Care Workers

Our church has also invited us to receive the name of a specific health care worker. We will pray for our health care worker and can send them letters of encouragement and even gift cards. You pr0bably know at least one health care worker you could do the same for. I’m grateful for this opportunity and T and I have already been brainstorming ways we can support her.

Our church has also put together a team of prayer warriors to pray for our local health care workers twice a day at shift change. You can join by setting aside 7 am and/or 7 pm as a time to pray for our health care heroes.

A Final Thought

We have established that reaching out helps those we wish to support and helps us too. Even the smallest acts of kindness have a ripple effect in the world and it’s truly beautiful.

Besides all of that, there is one last thing that T taught me about volunteering that I want to share with you. He was just six years old but I’ve never forgotten it.

We had just dropped off some food for a family that was experiencing some pretty serious troubles and as we were driving away his little voice came from the back seat.

“Mom, after we gave her that stuff I felt something. I think God just gave me a hug.”

Out of the mouth of babes…

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

John 15:12

If you have any other suggestions for ways to reach out and help our health care workers please leave them in the comments section below. If you have also been inspired to create a break room basket we would love to hear about it. If you have a suggestion on how I can best care for my personal health care hero, do tell! I’m anxious for ideas. And if you are a health care hero, (here’s a virtual hug for you), feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. We love to hear from you!

May His blessings and favor pour down upon you and may you be aware of His presence and His great love for you, today and always!
