It’s a simple concept. All you have to do is pause for one moment every day all through the month of November and think of one thing you are grateful for. You write it down on a slip of paper and drop it into your Gratitude Jar. Come Thanksgiving, you take them out and review all the wonderful ways you have been blessed over the last month. Parents, friends, and children can all participate in the creation of a Gratitude Jar.

Counting Your Blessings One Day At A Time

Each little slip of paper holds space for a short gratitude reminder. It can be anything. A family member, a friend, a stranger who made you smile. Or maybe the smell of Fall in the air, all crisp and invigorating has you feeling extra blessed. Maybe you are grateful that the season for boots and sweaters is here. Perhaps, you are thankful for your church, the apple orchard, your car, your job, the rain, the sun, your pet, your favorite song, a new book… I could go on forever counting my favorite blessings and so can you if you make a little time for it.

The Gratitude Jar Grand Finale

When Thanksgiving comes around, you take them out and read them together. It is time well spent. In our home, this is a tradition that keeps us in touch with what the holidays really represent. It serves as a daily reminder of what really matters and it helps keep us grounded and focused on the beauty that surrounds us. I know I am getting all squishy here, but honestly, it does the heart good to keep a Gratitude Jar. We not only reveal the current year but it is also fun to dig through the slips from previous Gratitude Jars.

Create Your Daily Entry Slips

We have daily entry sheets that include the day of the month on them but you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to. All you really need to have is thirty small slips of paper for each person contributing. If you want to use entry slips like ours, you can get them right here. We keep our blank slips cut and ready in an envelope next to our jar with a pen handy.

Decorate Your Gratitude Jar

You may be content with a simple label and that’s cool. But, it’s also fun to add some twinkle lights to the base of your Gratitude Jar. Or you can wrap the neck in some twine and maybe hot glue on some leaves or berries. Have fun with it. Just don’t get so carried away that it ends up hard to open and close. (Yup, I’ve done that.)
